DJI mavic 2 zoom
First, let’s talk about its design of the zoom. The new Mavic 2 Zoom is slightly bigger than the Mavic Air 2, and the weight of the drone is around 905 Grams.
Otherwise, you get to see the same portable design as the original Mavic series drones. The folding design will give an advantage over the Phantom series drones.
The folding design of the drone easily fits into a backpack and becomes ready to fly in less time. Therefore, make it a good portable drone.
The size of the drone is Mavic air 2 and zoom is the same, but the difference is in the camera sensors of the drone. The Zoom has 1/2.3″ CMOS sensors with 12-megapixel resolutions. Whereas the Mavic 2 Pro has 1′ CMOS sensors.
A gimbal is basically a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis while moving. It is mostly used by the professional cameraman for the film shooting. Now In the Modern era of the areal photography drones are also equipped with the Gimbals and one such example we get to see in the DJI Drones.
The Mavic 2 Zoom and the pro have a three-axis gimbal that gives the drone ability to shoot stable footages in any situation.
The three-axis gimbal is way more solid better and you can trust this. As compared to Mavic one the gimbal on the Mavic zoom seems to be top-quality now.
The Mavic zoom has a smaller sensor, and it doesn’t have a true flat profile. It has a Cinelike (the D-Cinelike makes the image of the drone look like a cinema with a Lookup Table) which is what we can see in the Mavic Air.
However, it just doesn’t keep the same amount of data, but we should be aware of that. It also has a LED light and sensor on the bottom that help the drone to land safely on the ground.
Active track and sensor
One of the biggest visual differences between the previous model and the Mavic zoom is it has a little camera on the outside. In the previous model that is Mavic pro only had front sensors, making it possible to fly back into a tree for crashes.
Whereas in the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, it has Omnidirectional sensors and the drone can avoid the obstacles from all the directions. The Smart features in both the drones are, It can avoid the obstacle even when the drone is tracking the object. As shown In the Video below.
In the video, we can see how smartly the drone sensor is working on active track mode. Without crashing onto the climber rods, it follows the object (the boy), and in the next clip; it keeps following the object (the man) even when the object gets hidden by the tree.
In the previous model of Mavic, it would have led to a crash while filming quick short video as it lacked sensor in the back of the drone.
However, the new Mavic zoom has a sensor at the back and front, which helps the drone to avoid obstacles not only in front but also backward while filming.
They improve the obstacle avoidance features in this drone, and it gives a good user experience while flying the drone and filming videos. The Mavic 2 Zoom and the Mavic 2 Pro have the same sensor, so this video is also valid for the Mavic 2 Pro.
Now talking about the battery the DJI Mavic 2 zoom has redesigned batteries these batteries along with the upgraded motors increase the flight time to 31minutes from 27minutes.
With this redesigned battery no previous battery chargers are compatible even though the pins look very similar they don’t fit. The drone has 8GB internal storage, SD card support up to 128 GB.
The new camera has a mechanical-optical zoom from 24 megapixels up to 48 megapixels while flying. This feature of Mavic zoom has opened up a whole new world in shooting and filming videos.
This camera now can shoot up to a 48-megapixel resolution of photos you know when stitching and comparing two photos. The real optical zoom that lets you get twice as close without losing quality.
The two times zoom opens up a lot of possibilities you can shoot from further away going unnoticed, but more than that you can compress the scene.
with longer focal lengths bringing the foreground and the background together, this gives you more flexibility with their compositions and can also make camera movements look more elegant.
The drone can shoot 4k at 30fps and has course lock function
While you’re shooting keep in mind that this lens is not a constant aperture, it will go from 2.8 down to 3.8 as you zoom into and check your exposure after zooming.
For instance, if you have seen the Mission Impossible Fallout trailer you noticed that every drone shot feels like it’s about 50 millimeters or longer the longer focal length gives you this elegant look to the camera movement and you can do the same thing with a Mavic zoom.
The Mavic 2 PRO and Mavic 2 Zoom is the first DJI drone with HDR and it makes some difference in exposure for certain scenes but truthfully D-log just looks better to me. Also quick note I leave my white balance to auto, just to see what the camera chooses.
The second note I didn’t have neutral density filters for this drone so some shots may not come out as good as they could have been.
Now one downside to these is it limits them to just 1080p resolution even though this is a 4k capable drone when you’re doing quick shots including the dolly zoom you are limited to just 1080 with the hyper-lapse.
However, you can save those individual frames and have a larger resolution file if you want to put them together down the road the defining feature of this drone is the zoom.
It is in the name Mavic zoom it’s a 2X zoom at 4k but if you drop to 1080, you can get a 4x through a digital but lossless zoom
Hyperlapse which is that time-lapse and again these are very easy to set up with just two quick presses and a couple more decisions you need to make for the hyper-lapse
like how long you want it to run and whether you want it to just stay stationary or move forward through the sky or rotate around a point of interest.
All options available to you and again I cannot stress enough how smooth and stable this footage looks, and it’s just a cool way to make a time-lapse from wherever you want anything you want you’re no longer constrained by having to set up a tripod somewhere that’s cool.
There are many quick short features in the drone of one of the among quick short is this one of my favorite.
DJI Mavic Zoom is also capable of something outstanding that is dolly zoom.
The dolly zoom is probably the most amazing thing that this drone can do it does automatically while you are flying it, with Just by your command.
The newest feature and one that is specific to this drone the dolly zoom which is a very specific type of shot that requires some serious
work to get or at least it has before this drone has come along the drone moves backward through space.
It uses its optical zoom that’s right it has an optical zoom to zoom in and keep the subject stationary now as that zoom happens you are compressing
the foreground and background and you’re just kind of making the area around your subject look a little bit more epic.
Here is the key or the rub depending on your perspective if you don’t have an epic area then it just kind of seems like a weird whoosh shot.
So now that it’s so easy to do with this drone. We are going to see a lot of these and they are going to lose some of their cool.
If you’re somebody who’s frequently standing on top of mountains or in other epic locations where a quick dolly zoom shot can add some pizzazz to your work and it’s worth thinking about.
If we can fly and then zoom in and zoom out and do amazing shots, this is just something new I have not seen us until now. And all that remembers on one gimbal and one lens.
As discuss earlier Mavic Zoom’s capability of going for a wide-angle lens like 24 millimeters to a telephoto lens of 48 millimeters will give you that kind of cinematic look
and also highlight that DJI claims to have you know developed a more accurate focus close without losing quality.
DJI says the units are coming for both units. But it’ll be a lot easier if these were just built in from the start. All right, let’s dissect D-log footage more.
When you are shooting in very low lights ISO 100-200 you’ll get clean footage. No noticeable noise.
Even when you zoom in, you are still getting excellent results, when bumping up the ISO more noise introduces, especially in the shadows.
It’s more noise than you would expect from this drone, but it’s still not as bad as what you get from the smaller sensor is in the Mavic 2 Zoom.
Now the remote looks very similar to the previous model, but we have this three-way switch on the side for moving from normal to tripod in the sport mode. Therefore, three modes on that switch now.
It might seem like a little weak but the joysticks are removable you can unscrew and screw in the body and it makes it a smaller profile and much easier to pack up this actually can make a significant difference in how small a camera bag you can fit all of this into.
Underneath you have got the same buttons and dials as the previous model but now that the right dial controls the zoom you can customize these controls easily within the app.
The connection from the remote to the drone uses the new occu sync 2.0 which that supports 1080 streaming up to five miles
It does some other smart stuff in the background that keeps that streaming high quality even in areas where many people might be on their Wi-Fi.
The drone controller has a little cutout notch on both sides for smartphones so if you’re using like an iPhone then you now have better access to your home button there whereas before you didn’t.
Pros and cons DJI Mavic 2 Zoom
- Digital or optical zoom
- Obstacle avoidance and active tracking (omnidirectional)
- Flight time
- Foldable design
- High-resolution images.
- Can’t record video 4k @ 60 fps
- Internal storage. It should have given more storage because 4k videos take more space.
If you are looking for a drone that has an omnidirectional sensor, Active tracking, and has an optical zoom camera than the Mavic 2 Zoom is the best choice for you.
Something to consider if you are an owner of the original Mavic and are considering upgrading, but I would probably skip the zoom unless you require that specifically hang on to what you have or consider the Mavic pro
Overall, the drone is one the best drone in terms of camera and if you are looking for the photography than this drone can be worth picking up.
If you are beginners, this might be a risky choice because you do not know how to ply the drone and there may have chances of crashes. But on the other perspective, you take a risk to learn properly and don’t meet with crashes.
